A Prayer for the Resurrection of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral

W. S. Kim / Korean Artist

When I look back at the past nine years I have been visiting France to continue with my projects and showcase my works, I realize that they were not always like a beautiful festival to me.
A series of terrorist attacks, which took place simultaneously across six districts in Paris on November 13, 2015, filled the entire city with shock and horror. Although the attacks took the lives of 132 and injured 349, the French National Salon Exhibition continued at Grand Palais.
Another disaster hit Paris on April 15, 2019 as a catastrophic fire broke out beneath the roof of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral. It was more than shocking to watch this historical building’s spire collapse in fire.
The construction of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral began in 1163 and continued until 1330 for 167 years. It is located on the Île de la Cité in the Seine in the center of Paris, France. It was where the rehabilitation trial and beatification of Jeanne d'Arc took place in 1455. It also went through difficult times as it was turned to a wine cellar during the French Revolution. The cathedral was the site of the coronation of Napoleon I in 1804. A special mass was held in this cathedral to celebrate the liberation of Paris from Germany. It is where Victor Hugo’s novel Notre-Dame de Paris is set. I sincerely pray for Notre-Dame’s quick restoration.
Wishing for the Resurrection of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, I have created a piece of sacred art.
I would like to dedicate the “Resurrection of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral (228 * 180 cm)” to my beloved French people. I truly hope this painting, which I worked on for 100 days to share grief with them, could become a source of energy to take away the sting out of Notre-Dame’s sorrows.
Sorrow or grief will not stop an artist’s passion.
I wish this solo exhibition at Carrousel du Louvre would bring us closer to the top of the world.
