'Woo Song' Kim seok-ki

Woo Song
Woo Song

Light from the East

'Woo-song' Kim Seok-ki is a Korean fine artist.
The 1980s was ‘A time to observe and reproduce nature' to him. He expressed in his works the beautiful four seasons of the East mainly by drawing them as they were. Through this process, he accomplished a study of the materials for his expression such as black inks and rice paper etc., as well as techniques to express the successive artistic tradition of the East. To him, it was a time to establish his esthetics based on Eastern philosophy.
In the 1990s, he worked in his own way for 'The simplification and transformation of nature'. He pursued the modernization of eastern paintings by attempting to repeatedly omit or emphasize nature instead of observing and drawing it as it was. This new experimental study of modern eastern paintings made him full of creative energy.
In the 21st century, he began to work on the theme of 'The expression of symbolic images of nature and traditional culture'. Drawing patterns became an extremely simplified process and symbolic images of the East were colourfully described using five main colours(black, white, red, blue and yellow). It was a turning point for him from black-and-white naturalism based on modesty and moderation to five-colour paintings with strong harmony between black-and-white and other colours.

Thus, 'five-coloured nature' has come into existence.

In the 2010s, in the world of his work, there has come a new trend for eastern paintings called 'Abstractness in nature and five-coloured nature'. The images and motifs of traditional paintings he used to enjoy have disappeared and been replaced with temperate, elliptical and simple diametric patterns. The changes of the last 30 years in his paintings seem like a history of art in itself.

Where is Woo-song heading now?
Now, he is going to develop his world of work in 'The Salon, in the Louvre Museum'.
‘The light from the East’ illuminates his new abstract world of work. Many flowers begin to bloom and blow away their pollen in his beautiful garden. ‘The light from the East’ is filtering in through a crack in the door, to the new world where a new utopia will form.
Woo-song's world of work, I hope, will be an undying light shining on humanity and beyond, into the cosmos giving off a positive energy which illuminates the paintings of the East and the West as ‘A bright light from the East’.
