Artist Seha Lee

"Breaking Down the Walls of Art Genre"

For the artist Seha Lee, even the very essence of chaos is harmony. There is absolutely no object or sense that exists alone for the word harmony. For example appearing in the artist's paintings are objects such as, kettles and bicycles, flowers and birds, two moons, trees and mountains, and coexisting together a sun and a moon. Everything is out of the frame of composition and it feels like the objects are saying "I don't need you next to me". It may appear to be a composition in which they are unaware of each other's existence. Despite not needing each other, the artist's hands completes the various frames by transferring the shape without disturbing the objects that have been in the same space for eternity. The disarray is so natural and comfortable, it is fascinating.

Why? How is the disorderly chaos so natural and comfortable?

Perhaps it is because the objects that make up the work has a very close relationship to the background. However, the existence of self-reliance has different roles and different episodes. Here, the artist naturally draws harmony to recognize multiple beings as one.

Ironically, even though I noticed this phenomenon, looking at the works by the artist Seha Lee, I often contemplate, 'What is this a part of?' Although a particular piece of work appear to be one, while being one at the same time it is dismantled. And while being dismantled at the same time it appears to be one! Whether there is a frame or not, in this structure of chaos, I am confused if I am to perceive this as one or multiple pieces of art. Perhaps this was masterfully devised and deliberately crafted by the artist who is continuously exerting her harmony into her art.

The harmony of harmony is not refined. It is not special nor it is fun. This is because it's so obvious.

Chaos isn't the only thing that is interesting because it isn't obvious. The realm of art hasn't deviated significantly from the category of visual or sense of touch (which is almost obsolete). We don't even expect and it is seldom we see anyone who attempts to venture beyond from these categories. Occasionally, installation works and media may appear to stimulate the hearing, however this is distinctly different in comparison to the works by the artist Seha Lee.

Rather than visualization of music, her work can be considered as the sound of art. She is an artistic painter who loves music and is long addicted to the violin. As a result, rather than showing music in her art, she musically plays her art so her audience may listen to her visual. When standing in front of her work, before even being able to review the details of every stroke, you begin to hear the melody of her work resonating in your head and pulsating through the heart. Who would ever dare think this is apparent?

Harmony2020-어제_나무_64.0x95.0x9.0cm_2020

Among her works on display this time, is an installation named "War and Peace". Broken violins lay there as if they are injured people and are surrounded full by casings. Just as our daily existence feels like a war, to us living in modern society. Shaping reality into the violins, the artist was probably trying to show hope in despair. Moreover, because she devoted her energy to this piece during the uncertain challenging times when the world was engaged in a war with the corona virus pandemic, it puts things more into perspective. The bandaged violins are like victims of the novel corona virus COVID-19, and the scattered casings resembles the abandoned masks. Not knowing when this war-like time will become peaceful, I applaud the artist's unapparent attempt.

In any work, there are multiple inside, outside, boundaries that can sometimes go beyond the universe and also into the unknown. An artist watches the outside from the inside and from the boundary may look at both the inside and the outside simultaneously. Through this piece of art, I was able to learn that this was eventually one of the formula to create a new star. In particular, another perfect harmony was achieved by grafting objects and installations with a painting. If an incomplete form of art was shown in the previous work, it would not be an exaggeration to say that this work has overcome the predecessor to capture the creation of a big bang. Every birth begins only when we walk through its obstacles and confront the world. This long journey is not just the story of the artist Seha Lee, but also our story. It will be a good opportunity to reflect upon ourselves through the artist's constant forever changing efforts. Harmony starts by breaking down boarders.

Let us now take the same position as the artist to replicate her view. In this moment, as one star we will be the universe.

Come to think of it, even when I first met the artist, Seha Lee, I've never been in the same space before. The unfinished work boasted their progress and welcomed me from every angle. Several unfinished work in progress pieces co-exists in the same space so naturally.

While the violin strings surrounds us both.

Thinking, experiencing, and making mistakes in a variety of art genre, I make a round-trip marathon as if I were crossing a stepping stone.

"Damian" whom I met in the dark years of my twenties, allowed me to step into the world of art with consolation and courage by providing a valuable lesson of exploring a new genre of art.

'Harmony - Tremble'

The 'Tremble' of joy, fear, and excitement combines the musical nature and musical science to harmonize music with my life.

Just as Santiago in the "Old Man and the Sea" paddle towards the changeless sea, I am thrilled as the work to be completed comes closer while I brush, saw, and thread a new string on a violin.

Brushing and peeling off the paint. Erecting, knocking down, raising and laying down a wooden block.

I experience a different kind of 'tremble' while breaking down the walls of new art genre, in this interesting work.

Within everything that surrounds my art, a violin's melody is always there to bring me comfort and happiness to life.

My recent work in progress "The Violin Project" features hundreds of anthropomorphic violins.

The subtitle of the exhibition is "Harmony - Resonance" and every work tries to satisfy me with its own unique variation.

From adding objects to the painting, to forming sculptures and installation art.

In addition to regular paint, natural materials such as stones and trees are fused and unleashed onto my work.

The relentless change that goes beyond the genre, flows out like a magma from deep inside and is my self-portrait; a result of being immersed in western classical music for many years.

Consequently, the various materials, forms, and contents that come into my work are intended to express the harmony of humanity and the order of the universe.

Through the influence of western classical musicians such as Mozart, Mendelssohn and Schubert; and literature such as Hermann Hesse's "Damian", Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea", and Tolstoy's "War and Peace", as an artist I want to express and fulfill my belief and will into the world my art.
