Eugene Gallery is delighted to present the 22nd solo exhibition of Kim Sang Yeoul (b.1966), Différance, who has been leading the mainstream Korean fine art scenes. The exhibition highlights and overlooks his artistic career ranging over 20 years. In particular, it is the first show of him after signing an exclusive contract with Eugene Gallery. Kim Sang Yeoul incorporates rather mysterious scenery and his reverence of nature in his paintings. The exhibition provides an opportunity to fully appreciate an array of Kim’s signature works named Secret Garden and Wind Garden series executed throughout his career as well as a large-scale triptych sizing over 5 meters specially commissioned for this show. In doing so, Eugene Gallery illuminates and archives his world of art and poses question of what painting is.

Secret Garden series gave Kim a great fame. Inspired by the traces of dust in his atelier, his distinctive methodology of painting exudes a truly secretive mood. Looking at his black and white paintings, the viewers unfold their rich imagination. They can think of glimmering shadow of leaves cast on curtains; they are provided with a surreal feeling of a foggy landscape. The exhibition is also enriched by his relatively recent works, the colored pieces of Secret Garden. Kim’s artistic practice involves arranging natural objects on his canvas and delicately spraying the paints to create the shadowy images. Repeating this process over a prolonged amount of time, the paintings consist of countless layers that seem incredibly flawless. This is the way that Kim reflects his awe of nature and attitude toward the being of painting itself.

However, the most notable body of art in this exhibition is indeed Kim’s Wind Garden series. In contrast to previous series, Wind Garden shows more abstract imagery and yields multi-sensory appreciation. In the beginning, Kim applies ash that he collects from his fireplace and covers the surface with dark acrylic paints in order to give visual depth. Then, he reveals the silhouettes of deep mountains with brighter colors that eventually seem beautifully layered. As a result of continued contemplation and perseverance to bring the image of nature more effectively to his canvas, the artist chooses to color the negative area to form the image.

Besides, Kim’s paintings and his artistic process remind us of the concept of différance, which is also the title of the show. A term coined by a French philosopher Jacques Derrida, it combines the meaning of ‘to differ’ and ‘to defer’. It happens by the time when the ‘e’ is being replaced by ‘a’ in the word différence. Briefly saying, the meaning is reiterated and slipped away with another interpretation. Traces are present but simultaneously absent. Wind Garden allows the viewers to feel the traces of nature with five senses. For instance, the silhouettes of mountains bring the melody of an ocean; a breeze from far away lands upon our skin. When it comes to Kim’s canvas, the accumulated colored fields with various density provide an abstractness thereby positioning his work of art somewhere in between abstract and figurative. His research like what is mentioned is his endeavor to surmount the boundaries of paintings and to reach the essence of art.

Sang Yeoul Kim’s works are collected in largely across museums including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts, Korea; Daegu Museum of Art. Harmonizing the aesthetics of the east and west, he is widely welcomed and wanted internationally. Furthermore, this solo exhibition of Kim shall be an opportunity for Eugene Gallery to offer Kim’s work to collectors with considerable depth and expertise.
