Cultural Sensibilities and International Network
Artworks of 79 women artists from Daegu, Gwangju, Portland, and Moscow are gathered in Deagu. Artists in Daegu and Gwangju are the member of Korean Modern Women Artists and have held and joined the international exhibitions for last 15 years. Artists from United States are member of OCWCA( Oregon Chapter Women's Caucus Artists) based in Portland and Seattle. Until 5th show, there have been the exhibition for commemorating 100th Anniversary of Korean -American Immigration and we extended and widened our interchange ranges not just between Daegu and US but other areas as well. Through these reunions, American artists have sympathized with Korean artists's art works for 10 years.
IRIDA is the Creative Association of Women Artists in Russia. With centering around Moscow, artists of IRIDA coming Korea have organized. Artistic exchange between Daegu and Moscow started when Kyungho Kim, the Korean ambassador in Moscow, arranged the connection between Namhee Park and Maria Esmont, the president of IRIDA. In 2008, main artists of IRIDA held the 15th exhibition with Rea-ru-bak-ho-jen, Association of Deagu Women Artists, in Daegu Art Center. In 2009, IRIDA invited us to hold exhibition, Tow Rainbows, in Central House of Artist in Moscow. The exhibition attracted and brought attention from people in Moscow.
The year 2011 means a lot to Daegu, because Daegu host the 13th World Championships in Athletics. Wishing the successful hosting, we organized the exhibition in collaboration with American and Russian women artists. In traditionally male dominated art field, women artists have been having hardships and challenges. However women artists should overcome such anguish and limitations and attain a distinctive formativeness which establishes their identity and full vitality. By having high self-esteem and refusing conventional artistic flows, they will be ready to face challenges and deviations. To achieve the goal, women artists should bond together internationally and develop the empathy from it.
Korean artists who possess the tight bond have strived to form the identity of women art. They show the figures of nature which are the results from the artists' contemplation of the nature and the essence of forms which are left by simplification. In addition, you can observe the combination of rich colors and modernized Korean traditional ink paintings condensed by vivid brush strokes and depicted with hyper realistic mood, while appreciating their works. Most of all, you will savor the unique sensibilities which can be analyzed as the humble naturalism and recognize the sounds of spirits streamed from the meditation. Those art works are the products of their struggles to obtain identities by themselves and to juggle their domestic lives with those of professional ones. With producing art works, in these days, Korean women artists have a new understanding of social, cultural meanings of the art by establishing new traditions and search the international alternatives in the women's empathy.
American artists mostly work and have their sphere of action around Oregon state. Their works show the marked
individualities and vary in category, style, and idea. Compared with two other women art, their artistic expressions are subtly different as the social messages they advocate and the diverse methods to combine objects and paintings. Their unique, origin works make us aware of and acknowledge our social and cultural situation. Artists in IRIDA also imply their artistic heritages and potential talents. By practicing Unique Aesthetic, logical synopsis, moderate sensibility, and constructive interpretation of nature, they don’t wrap their work by feminism or sink into a current trend, but firmly insist their own Aestheticism. In terms of reproducing steady pureness of estheticism, they present the intense beauty immortal mother nature and human who meditates the nature.
I deeply thank to Ms. Karen Swallow, Ms. Harriet Kaufman Levi and other artists from Portland, far east of the Pacific, as well as Anna Anikienko, Larisa Kosiakova and other 9 Russian artists from Moscow. Specially I appreciate what Una Kim, the professor of Portland State University has done for mediating between the West and the East. At the same time, I'd like to thank the Kyungpook National University Museum for inviting this show. With the exhibition which implies women artists' strifes and struggles to conventional fixed ideas, I wish people will recognize identity of women art in 21st century and comprehend contemporary women art.

Cultural Sensibilities 와 국제적 네트워크
대구를 중심으로 활동하는 여성미술가 40명, 광주를 대표하는 여성미술가 9명, 미국 포틀랜드시를 중심으로 활동하는 미국여성미술가 20명, 모스크바를 중심으로 활동하는 러시아연방여성미술가협회 IRIDA 에서 온 10명의 여성미술가들, 모두 79명의 국내외 여성미술가들의 작품이 한데 모였다. 대구와 광주의 여성미술가들은 한국미술협회에 등록된 <한국현대여성미술가회>맴버로서 지난 15년 동안 수시로 국제전을 개최하였고, 함께 해외전에 참여하였다. 미국측 여성미술가들은 오레곤주 미술간부위원회 OCWCA (Oregon Chapter Women's Caucus Artists) 회원들로서 포틀랜드와 시애틀을 중심으로 활동하는 미술가들이다. 지난 3월 작고한 포틀랜드의 M. M. Janovec과 류시숙씨의 미국에서의 만남이 계기가 되어 2001년 대구미술협회 주최로 <제 1회 한미 여성 감성전> (2001.8.7 - 2001.8.12)이 대구문화예술회관에서 이들의 작품들이 소개되었다. 2004년 포틀랜드 소재 리트먼&화이트갤러리에서 <한국인 미국이민 100주년 기념 제2회 한미여성작가전 (2004. 5.5-5.24)이 있었고, 2006년 경북대학교미술관에서 제 3회전 (2006.9.11 - 9.16)이 개최 되었는데 제 3회전에는 광주 여성작가들이 대거 참여하였다. 2009년 포틀랜드 리트먼&화이트갤러리에서 제 4회전(2009. 4.2-4.19)을 이어오면서 국경을 초월한 예술적 공감대를 지난 10년간 형성하여 왔다.
러시아연방여성미술가협회 IRIDA 는 구 러시아 연방의 각 국가의 여성미술가들이 포진한 연합미술협회인데, 한국을 방문하는 이들은 모스크바를 중심으로 활동하는 여성미술가들이다. 2007년 7월 모스크바 소재 주러시아한국대사관의 김경호 공사님께서 IRIDA의 Maria Esmont 회장과 박남희를 연결하여 모스크바와 대구의 네트워크가 시작하게 되었다. 2008년에 <여류 100호 제15회전>을 IRIDA의 주요 맴버들과 대구문화예술회관(2008.4.29 -5.4)에서 합동전을 가졌다. 2009년 IRIDA 측에서 <Two Rainbows> 란 명칭으로 <Central House of Artist in Moscow>(2009.6.16- 6.22)에서 <여류 100호회>를 초대하여 모스크바에서 합동전을 개최하여 모스크바에서 세인의 주목을 끌었다.
2011년은 대구시가 세계 무대에서 무척 중요한 해이다. <2011 세계육상선수권대회>를 개최하는 국제적 도시로서 대구의 위상을 감안하여 대구와 광주를 중심으로 한국의 여성미술가들이 개별적으로 개최하여 온 미국과 러시아 여성미술가들을 한 자리에 동시에 대구에서 초대전을 기획하게 된 것이다. 한국이든 미국이든 러시아든 기존미술은 남성 중심적 질서로 구성되어, 여성미술가들이 성공하고 주도적 역할을 하려면 끊임없는 투쟁과 노력이 요하며 초극해야 할 제약들이 많았다. 국제적으로 공통적인 여성의 고뇌와 한계성을 극복하고 여성의 정체성을 형성하는 독특한 조형성, 강한 생명력을 구축하기 위하여 피나는 노력을 해야한다. 도전과 일탈을 두려워하지 않고 강한 작품성, 스스로 온실을 거부하며 미술사의 흐름을 막연히 추종하는 것이 아니라 미술사를 주도하는 중심축에 서는 노력들이 요구된다. 여성미술가들이 국제적으로 연대하고 네트워크를 강화하며 수준높은 예술성을 구가하려는 공감대를 형성하게 된 것이다.
한국작가들은 광주와 대구에서 지역을 뛰어넘은 공동체 의식을 가지고 여성미술의 정체성을 구축하려고 노력해 온 미술가들이다. 오랜 시간 관조한 자연의 형상을 걸러 요체만 남겨 본질만 형상화 혹은 단순화, 지적 구축적 공간과 화려한 색상의 융합, 전통 수묵화의 감각을 현대적 언어로 승화, 자연의 대상을 생명력 넘치는 붓자국으로 요약, 화려한 색채의 감성적 해방, 전통적 오브제의 극사실적 묘사와 해체, 여성 특유의 여유로운 감성으로 해석한 소박한 자연주의, 대상의 재조립, 명상에 의거한 영혼의 울림을 구사한 이들은 모두 자신의 정체성을 통해 가정과 예술, 직장과 예술세계를 꿋꿋하게 지키며, 붓을 꺾지 않고 묵묵히 자신을 지켜온 작가들이다. 한국현대 여성미술의 전통을 세우고, 국제적 대안을 모색하며 여성적 공감대 속에서 미술이 가지는 사회적 문화적 의미를 재인식한다.
미국작가들은 주로 오레곤주를 중심으로 활동하는 작가들로 분류가 어려울 정도로 유형과 양식, 발상과 아이디어가 다양하다. 장르를 넘고 사회적 메시지와 유미주의, 평면과 오브제가 어우러져 각자의 목소리가 다르다. 러시아의 IRIDA 역시 러시아의 오랜 예술적 전통과 잠재력을 시사한다. 특유의 미의식, 논리적 요약, 절제된 감성과 구축적 자연 해석으로 페미니즘이란 구호로 포장하거나 시류에 함몰되지 않고 우직하게 심미주의를 고집하고 있다. 흔들림 없는 유미주의의 순수함, 자연의 애잔함, 때로는 격렬한 아름다움을 묵묵히 재현하며 아무리 변해도 변하지 않는 자연과 이를 관조하는 인간의 순수한 본성을 구김살 없이 표현한다.
태평양의 동쪽 끝자락 포틀랜드에서 오신 Ms. Karen Swallow, Ms. Harriet Kaufman Levi를 비롯한 미국작가들, 멀리 서쪽 모스크바에서 오시는 Anna Anikienko, Larisa Kosiakova 를 비롯한 러시아 미술가 9명에게 감사드린다. 한국과 서양의 중간역할을 하느라고 수고한 Portland State University의 Una KIM 교수에게 특히 감사드리며, 동시에 이 전시를 초대해 준 경북대학교 미술관 측에도 깊이 감사드린다. 한국을 중심으로 지구본의 오른쪽과 왼쪽에 위치한 3국의 여성미술가들의 투쟁어린 작품들을 통해서 현대여성미술을 이해하고 21세기 여성미술의 정체성을 가늠하는 데에 보탬이 되기를 기원한다.

It is with great honor to Madeline Meza Janovec, that five OWCA members travel to Daegu for the CULTURAL SENSIBILITIES V in June of 2011. We dedicate this catalog to her memory.
It is because of the very first visit Madeline made in 2001 that we all have the opportunity to continue the thread of the cultural connection made back then between the Oregon and Washington artists of the Oregon Women’s Caucus for Art and the Daegu Artists.
If it were not for Madeline’s enthusiasm for building and maintaining our connections with Daegu, we would not be celebrating our fifth Cultural Sensibilities Art Exhibit.
When See Sook Ryu took an art class from Madeline over 10 years ago, she had no idea that her friendship with Madeline would result in the Cultural Sensibilities series of art exchanges. We are now happy to welcome the women of Russia into our circle of art and friendship.
The cultural exchange series has enriched our lives and we look forward to sharing time with those who were in Portland in 2009, and before that in 2004. We had many laughs and conversations together, trips to galleries in Portland and the Oregon Coast and culminating with a “Karaoke” event at our farewell dinner.
I joined OWCA because of Madeline’s magnetic personality and was drawn into the possibility of meeting Korean women artists in Portland and traveling to Daegu. And now, the exciting event is almost upon us. I am looking forward to experiencing the flavor of Korean culture and seeing the beautiful countryside.

제 5회 CULTURAL SENSIBILITIES에 초대받게 됨을 기쁘게 생각합니다.
이번에 저희들은 미서부 오레곤을 중심으로 활동하는 WCA ( Woman Caocas for Atr)회원의 15명의 작품을 가지고 5명의 회원이 대구를 방문하게 되었습니다. 이렇게 오게 된 것은 이 전시회를 위해 헌신을 한Madeline Meza Janovec을 추모하기 위해서입니다.
그녀는 지난 2011년 3월 4일 많은 작품들과 업적을 남기고 이 세상을 떠나 고인이 되었습니다. Madeline Meza Janovec은 이 전시회를 위해 10년 전 2001년에 대구를 최초로 방문을 해 이 전시회의 기초가 되었습니다. 그녀를 통하여 계속해서 오레곤 여성작가들과 대구의 화가들과 문화적 교류가 지속되오 왔습니다.( 메덜린은 3번의 대구 방문이 있었습니다.) 만약 Madeline Meza Janovec이 대구와의 관계를 두텁게 하고 유지하려는 열정이 없었다면 우리는 이 다섯번째 전시회를 거행할 수 없었을 것입니다.
우리는 이제 또한 러시아 여성들이 우리와 함께 하게 된 것을 기쁘게 환영합니다.
메덜린과 류시숙이 미국 포틀랜드에서 메덜린의 수업을 듣고 우정을 샇을 때만 해도 이 교류가 이렇게 이어지리라는 생각은 못했을 것입니다. 이 문화 교류 CULTURAL SENSIBILITIES 전시회는 우리의 삶을 풍성하게 해주었고. 우리의 많은 예술적 감동을 나누고 싶게 했습니다. 2009년 그리고 그전인 2004년에는 미국 포틀랜드에서 대구 화가들의 방문으로 우리는 함께 포틀랜드에서 전시회를 하며 박물관, 갤러리 미서부 오레곤 코스트 등등을 방문 하면서 많은 대화와 웃음으로 추억을 남겼습니다. 그리고 작별 인사 저녁 식사 때는 함께 노래도 하며 우정을 나누었습니다. 그때 만났던 화가들과 다시 이 시간들을 나눌수 있게 된 것을 기대합니다.
제가 OWCA 에 가입 하게 된 것은 Madeline Meza Janovec의 매력적인 성격과 포틀랜드에 있는 한국 여성 화가들의 만남과 아름다운 대구에 올수 있는 것에 끌렸기 때문입니다. 그리고 드디어 이 흥분되는 이벤트는 거의 다 왔습니다.
저는 한국의 문화를 체험하고 아름다운 대구 지방을 보게 되는 것을 기대 하고 있습니다.

Dear friends women-artists,
I congratulate you with so important event in the sphere of culture and friendship between women-artists of our countries.
This time it is a meeting of representatives of the countries situated very far from each other. We have different cultural traditions and speak different languages. But the language of the Art helps us to understand each other.
We have met before in the Republic of Korea in 2008, in Moscow, Russia, in 2009, in Portland, USA, in 2010. Now we are good friends. We are glad to see each other again and new artistic works. New artists will glad to go sightseeing to know this far and very beautiful country.
We thank our Korean friends for their creative initiative in the organizing of these exhibitions, for their hospitality, for the concern for women-artists well-being.

우리 나라의 여성 화가들의 문화와 우정을 위한 아주 중요한 행사에 대해 축하드립니다.
이번에는 각 나라들의 대표들이 아주 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 서로 만나는 시간입니다.
우리는 서로 다른 언어를 사용하고 문화전통이 다르지만 예술의 언어가 서로를 이해 하도록 도와줍니다.
우리는 전에도 2008년 한국에서 2009년 러시아에서 그리고 2010년 포틀랜드 미국에서 만났던 적이 있습니다. 이제 우리는 좋은 친구들 입니다. 우리는 서로 다시 보고 새로운 미술작품들을 보게 되어서 기쁩니다. 새로운 작가들은 이 멀고 아주 아름다운 나라에 방문하는 것이 기쁠 것입니다.
우리는 한국 친구들에게 이러한 창의적인 전시회를 여는 것과 그들의 환대와 그리고 여성 화가들의 번영에 대한 관심에 감사 드립니다.
