개인전을 가진 최영조

지난 2월 15일부터 20일 까지 예맥화랑에서는 최영조 씨의 다섯 번째 개인전이 열렸다. 지난 86년부터 4년 정도의 준비기간을 거쳐 10호 내외의 수채화 작품 35점이 출품된 최씨의 이번 개인전은 모든 종이에 그린 산과 바다 등 풍경을 위주로 한 작품들이 선 보였다.
지금까지 최씨의 작품세계는 [안에서 베어 나오는 뜨거움으로 따스한 체온을 느끼게 하는 고독한 인간의 벗과 같은 조용한 암시와 내밀의 사연을 담고 있으며] (1977년 제2회 개인전 . 정점식 씨의 評)[이번 작품전에서 두드러지게 느낀 것은 어쩌면 수정체의 구도와도 같은 Form들이 색체의 스펙트럼 작용을 일으키는 세계를 전개시킨다. 그것들은 뜨거운 열이 응고된 광합성. 말하자면 아렉산드로나 사파이어 또는 오팔이나 루비와도 같은 보석일 수도 있는 감각이다.(1982년 제3회 개인전 .정점식 씨의 評)라고 평한 것처럼 치열함이 보였으나 이번 작품전에서는 좀더 관조적이라고나 할까 다소의 변화가 있었던 것이 작가 스스로의 말이기도 하다.
이번 작품세계는 종이의 흰 여백을 가능한 한 많이 남겨둔 채 구도를 잡은 작품들이 많이 선보였으며 그림의 소재도 스케치 여행을 다니면서 보고 느낀 것을 현장감과 생동감을 최대한 살려 표현했다는 점에서도 최씨의 작품세계의 변화를 엿볼 수 있었는데 가장 두드러진 것은 지금까지의 텁텁한 색체를 주로 사용하던 데서 원색 계통의 맑은 색을 많이 사용한 색채의 변화에서 볼 수 있었다.
중앙대학교 예술대학을 거쳐 계명대학교 대학원을 졸업한 최씨는 [신조회]와[藝同人]으로 활동하고 있으며 한국미술협회, 한국수채화협회, 아세아 수채화협회 회원으로 지금까지 왕성한 활동을 펼쳐 온 바 있다.
일단 작업을 시작하면 밤을 새워서라도 그 작품을 완성시켜야 붓을 놓는다는 그는 그러나 영상이 떠오르지 않을 때는 며칠이라도 붓을 잡지 않고 여행을 떠나거나 취미생활을 즐기며 시간을 보낸다고 미술을 하는 후배들이나 제자들에게 졸업 후에 5 년간을 대학을 다닐 때처럼 열심히 한다면 어떤 고난이나 어려움도 극복할 수 있다는 말을 항상 들려주는 최영조 씨는 성철 스님의 법어 ‘남도 나처럼 아껴라’ 라는 말을 좌우명으로 가슴에 새기고 있다고.
농촌에서 태어나 어린 시절부터 산 좋고 물 맑은 아름다운 풍경을 접하며 성장해 온 그는 바다가 없는 대구에서 살면서 바다를 즐겨 그려 왔는데, 이는 항상 보아도 말없는 바다에는 힘찬 파도가 있고 물위에 점점이 떠있는 바위들이나 고기잡이 배들이 더없이 낭만을 주는 묘한 매력이 있어 자주 찾게 되고 그리게 된다고 말한다.
대구미술대전과 신라미술대전의 초대 작가이며 경북미술대전의 운영위원과 초대 작가이기도 한 최영조 씨는 1남2녀를 둔 단란한 가정의 가장이기도 하다.
오는 10월경에는 서울에서 전공하고 있는 비구상 작품을 위주로 한 대작전을 가질 계획을 가지고 있다는 그는 이번 개인전이 끝나는 대로 그 준비에 들어갈 것이라고 기염을 토한다.

Choi, Young-Jo had his fifth solo exhibition from last Feb. 15 through 20 at Yemaek Gallery. He showed about 35 landscapes on small size of papers which had been done during four years after 1986. So far, his main concept was mainly about calm allusion and secret story that used to be a friend of lonely human being and heat from inner space making feel like human body temperature(Jeong, Jeom-Sik reviewed on 2nd Solo Exhibition, Feb. 1977). Prominent feature of the exhibition is the forms like crystalline lens composition spreading out the world which is active color spectrum. It probably is the feeling of heat solid 광합성 such as alexandrona saphire or opal, ruby kinds of gem.(1982, 3rd solo exhibition, critique by Jeong, Jeom-Sik) Although Jeong, Jeom-Sik said about ferocity, Choi himself mentioned change of intuition.
In this exhibition, he left white empty space as much as possible in many of his works in terms of composition. The source of Choi's work has been founded from his frequent sketch travels for showing maximum reality and activeness on his painting. But the most significant change of his recent works is using more vivid and clear primary colors than ever before.
After he finished his B.F.A. degree at Choong-Ang University School of Art, he took his master's degree at Kye-Myung University. Now he is an active member of Sin-Jo Art association as well as 'Ye Dong In', Korean Art Association, Korean Water Color Painting Association and Asian Water Color Painting Association. Once he started his work he never stops until he finish his work no matter how long time he spends even at midnight. But the time when he is not able to have a grasp of imagination he just pack up and travel or spends his time for a hobby. He always tells his students or younger artist that 5 years of hard and enthusiastic struggling will make them strong and successful in their field. He keeps word of honorable Korean buddhist monk 'Seong-Chul' "Take good care of others as you care yourself." in his mind.
He was born and grown in country side where mountains were beautiful and water was crystal clear. He has been nostalgic of the sea where he lives in Daegu the city far from the sea. Like Choi always says the sea gives him a wonderful remark. That is absolutely romantic from strong tide, floating like rocks and fishing boats of the sea. This will make Choi visit sea side frequently.
Choi is an inviting artist and a member administration committee of Daegu Grand Art Exhibition, Shilra Grand Art Exhibition and Kyungbuk Grand Art Exhibition. He is a father of two daughters and a son in a happy family.
This coming October, he is planning to have hue abstract painting exhibition in Seoul. He says he will eagerly do his best for his next exhibition as soon as he finish this 5th solo exhibition.
